How many estimates should I get for my remodeling project?
The general rule of thumb is to get three estimates for the work you wish to have done. This is not always necessary; there are many factors that come into play when planning your remodeling project. If you have been referred to a contractor from someone you know and are satisfied with their quality of work, make an appointment with them to come out and estimate your project. After having met the contractor, if you are comfortable with him and the price seems reasonable, then, one estimate might be all you need. However, if you are getting bids from contractors you have no experience with then it is a good idea to get three bids.
If the bids are within 10-15% of each other, then select to contractor you were the most comfortable with. If there is a greater price difference between the bids you may need to investigate a little further. It is possible the contractor may have chosen to use a different material; they may have suggested a different approach in completing your remodeling project or they may have left something out of their estimate. There are may possibilities why the estimates could differ.
While you are at it, ask for references. Another good idea before hiring a contractor is get the contractor license number and go on line to the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries site and look up the contractor to be sure they are properly licensed and insured.
